How to Cut a Dog's Nails
Knowing how to trim your dog's nails is an important part of
grooming process as well as for your dog's health. Excessive nail
growth can cause many problems for your dog and in some cases
nails will actually curl and grow back into the dog's feet. Pet
owners must know how to cut a dog’s nails or have someone else
do it for them.
Many people don’t know how to cut dogs nails because they are
afraid of cutting the quick of the nail. Once you learn how to trim a
dogs nails correctly it will be almost as easy as clipping your own.
A good sign that your dog’s nails are too long is the clicking noise
their feet make when walking on uncarpeted floors. Don’t wait
until the annual check-up and ask the veterinarian to do it. Below
are easy steps to show you how to cut your dogs nails. It is a
good idea however to have the veterinary or a professional
groomer show you how to trim a dog’s nails
1. You need a good pair of clipper’s for dogs. Do not try to
use nail clippers that are designed for men and women. A dog’s
nail is very hard and human clippers will not be strong enough.
2. Small dogs can sit in your lap while you cut their nails.
Sitting on the floor is often easiest when cutting a large dog nails
however they may be more difficult to keep still and an extra
person might be of some help.
3. A dog’s nail should always be cut at a 45 degree angle
from the bottom of the nail up. To avoid cutting into your dogs
quick it is very important to make several small cuts with the
clippers instead of one larger one. Once you see the black of the
quick appear at the center of the nail it is time to stop.
4. If you dog’s nails are brittle they may splinter when you cut
the nail. If so, using a sweeping motion, file the nail starting from
the back of the nail to the curve at the tip. This will remove any
unevenness and leave the nail smooth.
5. Nail clipping for dogs is just as stressful if not more as it is
on their owners. To ease your dog’s nerves it’s important to talk
to your dog while clipping and reassure him that everything is
going to be fine.
Once you know how to cut a dog’s yourself there should be no
excuse not to do it on a regular basis. The more often a dogs
nails are trimmed, the more the quick will retreat into the nail,
allowing you to cut shorter each time.
