Summer pet care , summer pet care tips

Summer is here and many people look forward to enjoying the sun and
the outdoors with their pets.  However, summer pet care is very
important because along with the fun are also hazards that can put your
pets in danger. By taking some safety measures and focusing on
summer pet care you will be able to decrease the risk of anything
happening to your beloved pets. Below is some important summer pet
care tips to help you keep your dog or cat safe this season:
Most Important Summer Pet Care Tips:

This is the most important summer pet care tip; never leave your dog or
cat unattended in a parked car. Every year we hear about a pet being
left in a car by their owner and dying from a heatstroke. Because dogs
and cats do not perspire they have to get rid of heat by panting and
through the pads of their feet. Even with the windows cracked, on a hot
day the temperature in a car can reach over 120° in just minutes. Call
animal control or the police immediately if you see an animal in a
parked car during the summer or anytime during the year that the
temperatures are high.

Make sure your pet is always wears an identification tag. This is not
just important for summer pet care but all year round. Proper
identification helps ensure that your dog can make its way home in the
case of theft, loss, or other emergency situations. Buy including your
pet’s name along with your phone number and address you can be
contacted directly and quickly if and when your pet is found.
Summer is here and it is mosquito season! Heartworm disease which is
fatal to both dogs and cats is transmitted by these mosquitoes so it is
very important to make sure your pet takes heartworm prevention
medicine.  Check with your veterinarian to see what is available for
your cat or dog.

During the summer limit your pets exercise. All pets need to exercise
even in the summer, but take caution with older dogs, short-nosed
dogs, and dogs with thick coats of fur. These dogs tend to over heat
and are more affected by warm temperatures. Keep in mind how hot it
gets in mid day and that asphalt can burn your pets paws so limit their
exercise to early morning or after the sun goes down.
Here is a few more summer pet care tips most pet owner should
already know:

•        Another summertime threat is fleas and ticks. Use only flea and
tick treatments recommended by your veterinarian. Some over-the-
counter flea and tick products can be toxic, even when used according
to instructions.

•        Provide plenty of water and shade for your pets while they're
enjoying the great outdoors so they can stay cool.

•        Pets can get sunburned too, and your pet may require sunscreen
on his or her nose and ear tips. Pets with light-colored noses or light-
colored fur on their ears are particularly vulnerable to sunburn and skin
cancer.
